Laser Resurfacing Q & A

What is laser skin resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing is a treatment that can remove damaged skin with a laser light. IPL stimulates healthy, new collagen and healthier skin while erasing brown spots and minimizing unattractive spider veins caused by sun damage. Once the damaged skin is removed, the unharmed new skin below will be exposed. Laser skin resurfacing can correct many skin problems, including fine lines, acne scars, pigmentation issues, and sun damage.

How does the treatment work?

IPL delivers high-intensity pulses of light that are computer-controlled and heat layers below the surface by penetrating the skin. The treatment is performed with a tiny laser light beam. This light beam is only about 1/10 the size of a single hair follicle. The laser penetrates the upper damaged layers of skin, moving into the deeper layers of skin. It will stimulate the cells deep in the skin to start producing new collagen and elastin. These things tend to dissipate over the years, so restoring collagen and elastin helps the skin look younger and more rejuvenated.

How long does laser resurfacing take?

Laser resurfacing usually takes only about 45 minutes, even if the entire face is treated. The doctor may advise patients to arrive around an hour ahead of time, however. This allows for the application of a numbing cream that will make the procedure much more comfortable for the patient.

Can laser skin resurfacing be combined with other treatments?

Yes, laser skin resurfacing can be combined with other treatments. In particular, patients may find that Botox or dermal fillers may work well with laser skin resurfacing. Dr. Randall is an expert in combining disciplines, allowing patients to achieve health in a way like no other.

What types of conditions can laser skin resurfacing help with?Laser Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing can be an ideal treatment for problems like crow's feet, smoker's lines around the lips, frown lines, and most other facial wrinkles. The light from IPL and radiofrequency can also help to erase the signs of sun damage including coarse skin, spider veins, large pores, redness, and pigmentation. This type of treatment can also be used to treat the hands, the chest area, and other areas where fine lines and wrinkles are a concern. Laser skin resurfacing offers impressive results without surgery, so it is sometimes even considered to be an excellent alternative to procedures like facelifts.
